My first foray into the 50 Shades of Grey series was an experience I will never forget! I was going through a monumental book slump and a friend handed me the 50 Shades books and they became my ultimate frivolous and binge-worthy reads! The 50 Shades of Grey series were the kind of books that I had an insanely fun time reading and they were the books that inspired the very first book club that I joined and it connected me to other women that actually loved to read!
When one of my Frolic sisters Aurora Dominguez got me a ticket to meet EL James at the Adrienne Arsht Center I knew this was going to be one of my favorite book events and the most special.
The book talk with EL James was a lovely and intimate event! They had an interesting discussion about how the birth of the 50 Shades series sparked a new sexual revolution for women and eliminated the sexual boundaries that are placed on women. EL James discussed her love of influencing women to read again and bringing a community of women together to share their love of romance!
The moderator asked EL James to define romance and she stated that romance is simply a “love story.” She also made a comment that sparked my little feminist heart when she said that the romance genre is the one genre that is made by women, written by women, and how the things that women love often get a bad rep. I couldn’t agree with this more because I always get ridiculed for the books I read and it’s so important to be proud of the books we are reading and never be ashamed of it!
Before the book event started they gave the audience a little slip of paper to ask our own questions for EL James! My question for EL James was actually picked! I asked her if she would ever have a beta male for her future book instead of the typical alpha male. The surprising thing is that I actually stumped her with this question!
After the event and her talk about her new release book The Mister, there was a special VIP book signing event and when I finally got her to sign my book I told her that I was the one that asked the question about having a beta male in her future novel and she responded with, “You marry a beta male but you read about alpha males!”
Meeting EL James was a lovely experience and her warm personality makes her one of my favorite authors to meet! Even though I don’t read many New Adult romance novels as much anymore I have a special place in my heart for EL James because she is the reason that I began to connect with other women in the book community!
