The Bookish Fairy

Young adult, magical realism, and every book in between infused with fairy dust...

Magical Three Monday Reads

January 21, 2019

Monday’s are usually less than magical for me but I decided to start this post to add a bit of magic to my Monday and your Monday as well! There are so many books out there that have added so much comfort in my life and I think comfort is what we all need on difficult Mondays!

1…Shadow and Bone

Your contemporary girl who is extremely behind on the hype train is finally reading a Leigh Bardugo book! The fantasy genre is not in my comfort zone but Leigh Bardugo is coming to my hometown on January 31st and I want to at least read one book by her before I go to the book signing! There is an unreal amount of excitement since the the Six of Crows Netflix tv show announcement and the FOMO for me is real! Also, it helps to know that one of my fave YouTubers readbyzoe is also going to be at the Leigh Bardugo book signing in Coral Gables, FL!

2…By Your Side

My book club is reading By Your Side for our February Galentines Day and I am so excited to begin this book! I read the Kasie West book Lucky in Love and I liked the book but didn’t love the story itself. I felt the story was more appropriate to a middle-grade reader. Although I have heard some really great reviews about the book By Your Side. I heard that one of the characters experience anxiety and that the anxiety rep was written perfectly! This is your typical fluffy contemporary romance but one of the main reasons why I am excited to read this book is because the two characters get trapped in a library! What can be more romantic than being trapped in a library?!

3…Slayer

This book was just released this month I am quite intrigued by this book! I saw a few episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and was very invested in the Buffy and Angel romance but never followed through with all the episodes. I have always wanted to get back into Buffy the Vampire Slayer and I think that this Buffy the Vampire inspired book will be the perfect way to delve into the slayer world again! Is it just me or are vampires making a comeback again?

If you want to help yourself and others get rid of the Manic Monday blues you are officially tagged to participate in this book tag!

Magical Three Mondays Reads Tag: Manic Monday Edition

January 14, 2019

If you’re having a Manic Monday like me, maybe these reads could brighten up your TBR…

1…In Paris With You by Clementine Beauvais

If you guys have been following my blog for a while you know that I LOVE to compare books to pop culture references. Right after reading the synopsis for In Paris With You, I immediately got the Before Sunrise vibes!

via GIPHY

This is one of the most romantic movies set in Europe for me due it’s simple and minimalistic style! What can be more romantic than two people walking around the streets of Vienna talking about the meaning of life and love?!

The synopsis of In Paris With You has two characters that made a connection in Paris years ago and then end up meeting again! Also, it doesn’t hurt that one of my favorite authors Nicola Yoon gave this book high praise!

2…90s Bitch: Media, Culture, and the Failed Promise of Gender Equality by Allison Yarrow

I have been waiting to get this book on Audible ever since this book has been released and I have to say that I have zero disappointments so far! This talks about 90s gender inequality and how the 90s isn’t so wonderfully nostalgic as we remember it! Yarrow talks about the term bitchification which is basically how society and media can destroy a woman for being powerful, outspoken, or successful. 90s Bitch covers everything about the 90s from Monica Lewinsky, Anita Hill, Hillary Clinton, how damaging 90210 was for girls, the RRRriot girl movement, the Girl Power movement, and even the Lillith Fair! This book is the bomb so far!

3…Circe by Madeline Miller

Circe is a mythological realism story about the Greek Goddess witch, named Circe and it’s essentially a retelling of the Iliad but with a feminist twist to it! Since the Iliad and most of Greek mythology was written from the perspective of a man women weren’t always depicted in the best light. Circe is written as a strong character who is in control of her own destiny and I am getting drunk on Madeline Miller’s words! Her writing is one of the most beautiful pieces of writing that I have ever read. I have never been a fan of the Iliad due to the fact that I find the epic poem form quite dull but Madeline Miller brings life to this story while having a poetic and lyrical quality to her writing!

Please tell me about your Manic Monday in the comments and any tbr recommendations to make Monday’s the new Friday’s! (Maybe Not)

Magical Three Monday Reads Tag: Holiday New Year Edition

December 31, 2018

New Year’s Eve is finally here! Here are my top three magical Monday reads that I cannot wait to read for the New Year of 2019!

1…The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern

My excitement for this book is an absolute understatement! I devoured The Night Circus and if anyone knows about Erin Morgenstern you would know that The Night Circus was the debut novel for this author! There are few authors out there where their first novel is an unequivocal masterpiece and The Night Circus is in this category for so many reasons! If you haven’t read Morgenstern’s work and you want to experience the reasons why her writing is pure magic then read The Night Circus before the November release of The Starless Sea!

2…Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Taylor Jenkins Reid completely broke my heart with The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and I have a feeling Daisy Jones & The Six will be no exception! If you’re curious to hear my thoughts about Evelyn Hugo, read my review about this book that left me a massive book hangover here.

I have always had a fascination with the ’60s and 70’s ever since I was a little girl and instead of listening to Boys 2 Men and Ace of Base, I was grooving along to bands like The Turtles, The Beach Boys, and the Beatles!

Daisy Jones & The Six is giving me the Penny Lane feels and this book is right up my alley because when Almost Famous debuted I was obsessed with the character of Penny Lane back in high school!

Although this isn’t a story about a groupie following a band, this is about a girl named Daisy who becomes one of the lead bandmembers of an iconic band in the 1970s! Taylor Jenkins Reid clearly has a gift of writing historical fiction after the success of Evelyn Hugo and I have a feeling this book is going to be HUGE!  I am pretty certain this is going to be my fave book of 2019! March can’t come quickly enough!!!

3…Again, but Better by Christine Riccio

Christine Riccio is the first booktuber I started following on Booktube when I found that Booktube was an actual thing and I absolutely gobbled up her channel polandbananasBOOKS! I had the pleasure of meeting Christine Riccio in BookNet Fest and I am so excited for her debut novel!

Again, But Better is a new adult contemporary novel set in college and I am SO EXCITED to read this book because there are not enough new adult contemporary novels that are set in college! I love to read novels set in college and the last one I read was Fangirl which disappointed me, unfortunately. Find out why the book Fangirl was a big dud for me and why Rainbow Rowell and I no longer get along here.

Christine Riccio wrote a book that is right up my alley especially since the main character takes a semester abroad to London! My book nerd heart is dying to go to London to go book shopping and of course go on the Harry Potter tour! Since I have been watching Christine Riccio’s channel for a while now I have a feeling there will be a Harry Potter tour involved here hopefully! EEEK!

via GIPHY

This is a coming of age novel and I am a sucker for coming of age novels especially when it involves a new country! This book comes out in May and I am planning to start reserving this book in the library! One of my bookolutions for 2019 is to not buy any books for the New Year…unless there is an author signing involved and I don’t own their books!

I have a feeling 2019 is going to be the most amazing year for reading! What are your three magical reads for 2019?! Chat with me in the comments below!

Feel free to participate in this book tag and Happy New Year of Reading and fangirling!

Magical Three Monday Reads Holiday Tag

December 24, 2018

Happy Holidays! This Monday is definitely all about magic today since it’s held on my actual day off and it’s the beginning of the holiday season! WOOP WOOP!

via GIPHY

Without further ado, here are my three magical reads for the week that have been filled with absolute magic and the joy of the holiday season!

1…The Afterlife of Holly Chase

The hype is real because this book is so addicting! This book is my book club’s choice for the month and I am literally not able to stop listening to this book! I have to say that the audiobook for The Afterlife of Holly Chase is LIFE! This story is very much a character-driven story which is my favorite kind of story to read! The audiobook narrator Erin Spencer perfectly captures the heart of the MC Holly Chase and I am absolutely in love with this story so far! The Afterlife of Holly Chase is essentially the Christmas Carol but with a twist! I am absolutely delighted with this book so far and I cannot wait to post about my final thoughts of this book!

2…The Christmas Company

Yet another story that I am currently reading that I haven’t finished yet! (This has been the recurring theme in my life since October of 2018!) I am now an official addict of all things Hallmark! I used to be more of a grinch during Christmas time and the magic of Hallmark movies brought that little holiday sparkle to my life!

via GIPHY

I mean who can resist a gingerbread competition with Lacey Chabert?!

When I found out that Hallmark also has a Hallmark publishing company with cozy and romantic holiday stories I raced to my closest bookstore to see what Hallmark books are available. I have only read about 20 pages of this book but I can tell I am going to speed through this book in no time! I have seen great reviews about this Hallmark book on Goodreads and can’t wait to continue reading this book over some hot cocoa!

I have turned into such a cliche…

3…Let it Snow: Three Holiday Romances

Now this book got so many mixed reviews but at the time that I read this book, I honestly loved it. I actually loved it much more than the other holiday book My True Love Gave to Me! When I read the book Let it Snow, it gave me those cozy and magical holiday-feels with a quirky twist (Anything with John Green has a quirky twist!) and the stories just provided simple Hallmark-like entertainment! I know that John Green’s story had some controversy with his obsessive and problematic cheerleader-hate but besides that, I did enjoy the storyline and the quest for those cheesy hash browns from Waffle House! Sometimes we just need to enjoy stories for what they are and not take everything so seriously because these stories were freaking adorable!

Feel free if you would like to participate in this book tag!

I wish everyone the happiest of holidays with friends and loved ones! Hope you all get everything you asked for this year (Hopefully it involves many books and Barnes and Noble gift cards) and chat with me to let me know what are your favorite magical holiday reads!

***Magical Three Monday Reads Tag***

December 17, 2018

Monday’s are usually less than magical for me but I decided to start this post to add a bit of magic to my Monday and your Monday’s as well! There are so many books out there that have added so much comfort in my life and I think comfort is what we all need on difficult Mondays!

Here are my top three magical reads to lift those dreaded Monday blues!

1…Analee, in Real Life

Enjoying a Cuban pastelito while reading Analee, in Real Life!

I have already added this book to a previous Three Magical Reads post but I added it before I finished reading it and now that I finished I can officially put this book into my magical reads category! As a Cuban-American woman, I have never been represented in a YA contemporary before and this book has a main character named Analee who is Cuban-American! This book really filled me with so much nostalgia of how it was like to grow up as a very awkward teenager in a Cuban-American family. This book gave me the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before feels when it came to the romance. Although one of the things that I really loved most about the book is seeing the growth of Analee and how she learns to love herself and feel more comfortable in her own skin.

2…Girl, Wash Your Face

Honestly, I probably have this book in almost every book list! When I need a pick me up this book is my go-to when I feel discouraged and insecure. Rachel Hollis is like the girlfriend you always wanted that reminds you that you are not alone in the struggle and pushes you to keep going no matter what! If you’re looking for a new Oprah in your life Rachel Hollis will be the answer to your prayers!

3…The Thorn Necklace

If you have read my posts for a while now you will know that Francesca Lia Block is my favorite author of all time. She wrote a book that is a writing guide and memoir all packed into one! This is the year that I have been working on my novel and I have been using the outline guides for this book on a daily basis! This author has always been an inspiration for me and her writing memoir has been everything to my life! Read my gushing and fangirly review of this book here.

Feel free if you would like to participate in this book tag!

I would love to read your comments and chat about your three magical reads on a Monday! We need to work together to get rid of those Monday blues and books are the perfect antidote against Mondays!
