The Bookish Fairy

Young adult, magical realism, and every book in between infused with fairy dust...

Magical Three Monday Reads: Latinx Reads

October 1, 2018

Here is my own Monday book tag for my top three favorite reads for Hispanic Heritage Month that have added a little bit of magica in my own life!

1) Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel

I picked up this book in high school and let me just say this was one of the first books that made me fall completely in love with the magical realism genre! This book is a magical Mexican fairy tale mostly told through Mexican recipes. This book is exceptionally written and it combines the classic dreamy and flowy fashion of a fairy tale while making you incredibly hungry. Bring your appetite and make the Christmas Rolls recipe featured in the book here.

2) Woman in Front of the Sun: On Becoming a Writer by Judith Ortiz Cofer

This book is a collection of essays, poems, and folklore told by Puerto Rican born Judith Ortiz Cofer about the process of becoming a writer. Her essays were very inspirational and have definitely been my go to when the writing process has been difficult for me. One of the most important lessons that I have learned from Judith Ortiz Cofer was that everyone could find time to write even in the most inopportune moments.

3) The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo

I met Elizabeth Acevedo by chance. I had no idea who she was at the time. I was there to meet Children of Blood and Bone author Tomi Adeyemi and Elizabeth Acevedo completely BLEW ME AWAY! Listening to Elizabeth Acevedo speak was absolutely riveting and I told myself that I wasn’t going to buy another book that day but this little book nerd couldn’t help herself! I did a combination of reading and listening to The Poet X. Acevedo narrates her own book and needless to say the experience was absolutely magical! The story is written through slam poetry and I highly recommend that you listen to the audio version of The Poet X. Listening to Elizabeth Acevedo narrate her own book brings such a personal, powerful, and intimate feel. Read my review about it here.

Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag

July 6, 2018

I have never heard of a Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag until this year and since I have seen many bloggers/vloggers use this tag, I am going to jump on the tag bandwagon!

This Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag questions comes from the book vlogger emmabooks!

1…Favorite book you read so far is…

Save the Date!

Obvi Morgan Matson is one of my favorite authors of all time and even more so this year since I had the opportunity to meet her! She is an absolute love IRL and so easy to talk to! This book gave me all the feels! I love the fact that the story centers on a close quirky family and the story just pulled on my heartstrings!

2…The best sequel you have read is…

Eeeek! None! I need to get with the program I know…

I usually gravitate more to stand alone novels because series/sequels are hard for me to keep up with!

3…A new release you haven’t read yet but are really excited to…

I feel like I am going to absolutely adore this book and this is on my top ten summer TBR list! What can be a more perfect summer read than L.A. fashion boutiques and hopping around Los Angeles in search of the best burger?!

4…Your most anticipated sequel for the rest of the year…

OMG! I cannot wait for Wildcard! I am not a huge science fiction reader but reading Warcross completely took me by surprise! I love the futuristic and high-tech virtual-reality world that Marie Lu created! The characters are all kick-ass, complex, and wonderful in every way! Warcross would make an excellent movie especially with all the hype with shows like Westworld and VR technology! Even though I totally guessed the plot twist that was revealed, the Warcross book was no less engaging and phenomenal. I know that Wildcard will not disappoint and that it is going to be a perfect ending to this awesome duology!

5…Your biggest disappointment you have read this year…

Ok…I heard so much about this book on Goodreads! I heard that this book is a great feel-good romance novel and it was described as the kind of book that makes you feel all giddy after you read it! Overall, I felt that this book was an entertaining read but the book was surprisingly a big flop for me! There were elements in the book that were missing and I felt like the ending was just a big dud!

6…The book you weren’t expecting to love…

I have no idea what I was thinking but this book was pure Harry Potter level for me and I am highly anticipating the second book! Read my review about it here.

7…My favorite new to me author…

Pure unadulterated delight! This author wrote the perfect and heart-warming YA contemporary! I need to read all of her books! Read my review about it here.

8…New Fictional Crushes…

I loooove Bill from Save the Date! He is such a sweetheart and how can you not fall in love with someone that spontaneously dances with you in the middle of a grocery store?!

9…Your new favorite fictional character…

J.J. from Save the Date was a trip! He wasn’t the main character of the book but this guy cracked me up! I hope that Morgan Matson brings this lovable goofball back for her future books!

10…A book that made you cry…

Here we go again people…just call this the Save the Date book tag! (Sorry but I love this book so much!) Well, since this book is about a wedding and a family that is going through many changes I was getting teary-eyed many times throughout this book! I love the Grant family and the strong bond that this family has and I need them back in my life!

11…A book that made you happy…

Girl Wash Your Face was such an uplifting book and after I was done reading it I just had a big smile plastered on my face!

12…Your favorite review/blog post you wrote this year…

COBAB was a hard book for me to review but I am so happy with the end product! Read my review about it here. My favorite blog post was Future YA Classics! This book tag was such a fun and original book tag to write!

13…The most beautiful book you have purchased this year…

Actually I don’t own this book but it’s the most striking book cover I have seen this year and I am still dying to read this book! This is on my fall TBR list and I NEED to read this book before the end of the year!

14…Books You Need to Finish Before the End of the Year…

I will not let yet another year go by without finishing ACOTAR and Fangirl! I am sick of feeling the FOMO and I need to get with it!!!

Finally, this is the end of my book tag! Anyone that wants to do this book tag is more than welcome to! Please let me know in the comments below your mid-year book goals and the books that you have read this year that you just cannot get over!

Favorite Book Playlist Book Tag

June 27, 2018

Playlist Fairy

Ever since I had my portable mp3 player, I have been obsessed with making playlists. I love to make playlists for every mood and for every significant event in my life! I have about twenty Spotify playlists that I have created myself. I made a playlist for my wedding ceremony and reception, my best friends bridal shower, girlboss inspired playlist, drinking wine playlist, and even a high school nostalgia playlist!

Yes, I know I am a bit extra when it comes to making playlists! So, ever since I saw that book playlists were becoming a thing I naturally jumped on it!

Usually, when I write book reviews, I usually make a book playlist! Here are my top favorite playlists that I have created on Spotify!

Moxie…this book totally brought out the feminist riot girl in me! I had so much fun making this playlist because I love music made by women and I was a total freak for some of these bands back in high school!

Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour…I already have a road trip playlist but Morgan Matson is the QUEEN of playlists when it comes to her books and this will be my official road trip playlist from now on!

Why We Broke Up…my perfectly emo break up playlist!

I See London, I See France…my Eurocentric book playlist!

Geekerella...hands down my favorite playlist because it includes my favorite fandoms!

What are your favorite book playlists?! Comment below!

I would like to tag a few of my favorite bloggers and ask them what is their favorite book inspired playlists?

The Sunshine Blogger Award

June 25, 2018

Thank you so much, Marina, for nominating me for the Sunshine Blogger award! Please check out Marina’s blog Books of Magic, it is absolutely lovely! This is the second award Marina has nominated me for and I am so thankful for our blogging friendship even though we haven’t met in IRL but I hope to meet her in the future! I was nominated for this award when I was going through a crazy period of my life which is known as the END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR PEOPLE! I am now so happy that I can now go back to a more consistent blogging schedule! Now let’s get started!

The rules for accepting the award are as follows:

  • Thank the blogger who nominated you
  • Nominate 11 other bloggers to receive the award and write them 11 new questions
  • Display the rules and the Sunshine Blogger Award logo in your post

Marina’s Questions…

1. What is the first novel you’ve ever read?

Oh man, talk about taking it back! My first novel was The Baby-Sitters Club Kristy’s Great Idea!

This book was iconic for me and it shaped me so much as a reader growing up! I love that this book is about a couple of girls who start a business together which was rare to find in the early 90’s! Usually, pop culture loves to pit women against one another and I love that BSC is about female bonding and running a business through all the crazy middle-school drama that they go through together! I am all about girl power!

2. What is your favorite animal?

Well, I think my blog name speaks for itself and the incessant cat gifs and pictures of my cat modeling for my book reviews!

Oh and not to mention, I have an Instagram page dedicated solely to my cat @charliechuchi! Also, I have a fascination with fairies and my fantasy animal would be a combo between a cat and a fairy, hence my goofy blog name!

3. What is your favorite graphic novel/comic?

I am a total Archie freaaaak! I have been reading Archie comics since I was in the second grade! I have always had a thing for love triangles and I will always be Team Betty! (BTW I absolutely adore the tv show Riverdale and I am obsessed with Betty and Veronica’s friendship! And Jughead…swoooon…don’t even get me started!)

via GIPHY

4. What’s the worst book you’ve ever read and why?

Oh man, I was going through a romance book phase and I joined this book club at one point that was crazy for 50 Shades of Grey. It was actually a fun period of my life but I have moved on from erotic romances like that and one of the books we read was a book called Wanderlust. Oh dear! That book was traumatic! This book involves rape and the character falling for the person that assaulted her which I feel is just completely wrong and problematic! It’s not romantic and it’s definitely not sexy! These authors need to stop glamorizing rape! Not to mention, the book was just badly written and the characters were underdeveloped.

5. Have you ever tried reading in another language, and which one?

I have tried to read One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez in Spanish and it was a fail!

6. Your favorite holiday, a book, and a movie related to it?

My favorite holiday is Halloween! I am a Halloweenie girl at heart! The Halloween book that I adore to death hands down is my childhood book The Cat Who Wanted to Fly!

I legit read this story to my class every school year! Every year, I wear my witch hat, grab an inflatable black cat, and throw the cat across the room while I read this story!

via GIPHY

Nothing makes me happier than seeing my kids faces light up when I am reading this story! And of course, my favorite Halloween movie of all time is Hocus Pocus! I am all about witches during Halloween and I always make sure to read a witchy book! Any recommendations anyone?

7. You can choose one Deathly Hallow. Which one and why?

I would choose the Cloak of Invisibility because the thought of being invisible is rather appealing for this introvert! If I want to get out of an awkward party, go to the bookstore in my pajamas, or skip the lines at Disney World all I need is that invisibility cloak!

8. Cats or dogs? Or horses?

I think this answers your question!

9. Do you have a hobby and what is it? You better not say reading hahaha, that’s not a hobby, it’s a life calling.

I love to write and I am working on a magical realism novel at the moment! I am planning to do Camp NaNoWriMo next month in July! My goal is 10,000 words for now! Wish me luck!

10. Do you like art? If yes, who is your favorite illustrator/painter?

Art museums are a thing for me and one of my favorite activities is going to art events especially contemporary art events! I have always been a huge pop art fan and currently, I am loving anything by Deborah Azzopardi! Her use of bright colors and playful content is enough to get your attention!

Future YA Classics

April 28, 2018

Before I started to write this book tag I started to think back to all the classics that I grew to absolutely love as a child! I remember reading Little Women and hiding it under my desk in the sixth grade and wanting to be just like Jo! And I remember falling in love with the quirky Anne from Anne of Green Gables and getting completely sucked into the glitzy world of The Great Gatsby! Classics are special because they are the kind of books that will always be a part of me and they are always the books that I compare to others that I have read! Classic books are like a first love where it will never be the same as your first!

I found the post about Future YA Classics through Epic Reads and I came up with the idea of this book tag! When I think about all the books that I have read there are quite a few books on my list that I believe should be future classics!

Weetzie Bat

Weetzie Bat has had a profound impact on my worldview and it changed my whole outlook on life when I opened this book at the age of sixteen! Weetzie Bat is a magical realism book set in a dream-like Los Angeles, known as Shangri La. This book was published in 1984 and it’s ahead of its time because it covered controversial topics such as homosexuality, AIDS, gay marriage, and it is written in such a whimsical and poetic way that you just want to lose yourself in Shangri La forever! We all know that the books by Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Isabel Allende are the classic writers of magical realism but Weetzie Bat would be a great future addition! Weetzie Bat is a part of me and it’s the one book that I always go to when the world is getting a bit scary.

The Fault in Our Stars

via GIPHY

Obviously, I can’t do this list without adding a John Green book! This book completely broke me because it’s not just your typical weepy book about two kids with cancer, it’s about the honest portrayal of how these kids live, the intense connection between the two of them, and it teaches you to appreciate the little things in life that we take for granted. I love how they don’t gloss over the ugliness of cancer and how Augustus wasn’t defined by his cancer. Read my review of this book here.

Children of Blood and Bone

What can I say about this book?! I literally have no words! Reading this book was an epic ride! Children of Blood and Bone is a West-African fantasy that centers on the unforgettable characters of Zelie, Amari, Inan, and Zelie’s brother Tzain. These group of amazing characters is on a quest to bring magic back to their people and they go on an insane adventure that changes the whole trajectory of their lives. Not only is this book a fantasy it also speaks to our society when it comes to issues of race and police brutality! I didn’t expect this book to be this amazing and lately, I have been hearing comparisons to it being the next Harry Potter and I believe Children of Blood and Bone is on its way to future classics shelf!

Simon vs. the Homo-Sapien Agenda

Albertalli’s book was adorable and touching from beginning to end! I think this book will make a great future classic because it really speaks to teens about the struggles of coming out and how misunderstood everyone else is about the pressure! This book warmed my heart in every way and it made me feel a multitude of emotions when I was reading it! Read my review about it here.

The Night Circus

The Night Circus is the kind of book that is captivating and leaves you with a sense of wonder. This magical realism book centers around this mysterious circus that only appears at night. In the circus, there are two magicians named Celia and Marco who have been trained to be magicians since they were children. Throughout the mystical backdrop of the circus, they both fall in love with one another and the battle of magic begins.

The Night Circus should be a future classic because the writing was absolutely exquisite. The writing was so detailed and essentially the elusive circus was the MC of the story. Reading this book was an experience and I was overwhelmed by the absolute beauty of the writing. Please hurry up and write another future classic Morgenstern!

I would like to tag a few of my favorite bloggers and ask them what books do they think should be future classics:

Madalyn @ Novel Ink

Marina @ Books of Magic

Flo @ Book Nerds Across America

Michelle @ The Writing Hufflepuff

Melanie @ Story Shaped Girl

Victoria @ A Bookish Secret

Tabby @ orangeowldiaries

If anyone else would like to participate in this book tag please do! Let me know in the comments below what are your future classics?!
