The Bookish Fairy

Young adult, magical realism, and every book in between infused with fairy dust...

Meeting Leigh Bardugo

February 1, 2019

My TBR for this year of 2019 was to read Leigh Bardugo’s books and I am happy to report that I read exactly one book and that is Smoke and Bone! So I had a very elaborate schedule of how I was going to read Bardugo’s books before meeting her for the January 31st King of Scars book signing and that was a big fail! Although I don’t feel as guilty about not reading the whole trilogy because my favorite booktuber readbyzoe also only read Shadow and Bone and she is one of the biggest booktubers our there so I don’t feel so bad!

Finally Meeting Leigh Bardugo…

The event kicked off at 6:30 and it began in the fan meetup room which was the cutest meetup ever! They had everything from a cute photobooth area, a place to pick up bookish pins and fun quizzes (Apparently I am part of the Etherealki order.) to find out what Grishaverse order you belong in, a Leigh Bardugo merchandise section with all her other books, and my fave booktube girls were there! Zoe from readbyzoe, Hailey from Hailey in Bookland, and Hannah from a Clockwork Reader were there!

And of course the piece de resistance…the King of Scars book!!! EEEK!

After the most epic fan meetup of my dreams, we finally got to hear the Queen of the Grishaverse Leigh Bardugo discuss her new upcoming book King of Scars! I thought the discussion setup was very interactive because the discussion focused on Q&A’s primarily! Since I have only read Smoke and Bone, I was completely lost throughout most of the Q&A because the questions were mostly made up of Six of Crows! Even though, I am not well-versed in the land of Bardugo I am still deliriously happy to be a part of this event and to delve into her books and find out who this Kaz is from Six of Crows! There were many questions about Kaz and fangirling over Kaz! I am definitely very interested to find out more about this KAZ!

My friends and I waited for about an hour for the Leigh Bardugo book signing and we took some fun bookish pictures and met some awesome bookish fangirls!

Finally, I had the opportunity to get face to face with the Grisha queen!

During the book signing, I told her that Shadow and Bone is the only book I have read from the Grishaverse and that I am completely obsessed with the Darkling! Bardugo smirked and said, “You have a long road ahead of you.” Those eight words have further confirmed the fact that I have to finish the rest of the Grishaverse asap and not prolong the series the way that I prolong every series that I have ever read…or not read yet…eeek

And just to top it all off after we got our book signed, we were gifted an adorable cookie inspired by the King of Scars book! Needless to say, after the book signing we were famished and we stopped by one of my favorite bars in Coral Gables to have a beer and when I got home I literally fed my demons with this delectable Leigh Bardugo cookie!

Tell me if you have ever been to a Leigh Bardugo signing and let me know what are your favorite books by Leigh Bardugo! And maybe give me some information about this Kaz I keep hearing about! If he is better than the Darkling then I am very intrigued!

Miami Book Fair Weekend 2018

November 23, 2018

Honestly, I have to say that this was the most jam-packed weekend that I have ever had in the Miami Book Fair!

I arrived at the book fair on Saturday, November 17th at around 10 am in order to avoid having to pay Miami’s ridiculous parking fees. My priority was to take advantage of the free parking available at the Miami Dade College parking garage and I rushed to get over there to meet my book club friends!

When I arrived at the Miami Book Fair one of my good book club friends happened to snag me a press pass and I was luckily able to take advantage of as much free food, desserts, tea, and coffee that my bookish heart desired. Life was good.

Matching shirts for book club!

My friends were going to book events back to back but my schedule was more relaxed since I only had two book panels that I planned on attending that Saturday and two on Sunday. Although since I hadn’t seen my book buddies in a while and in effort to spend time with them I decided to stay all day Saturday and Sunday tagging along. They were making me look bad when I saw them with actual suitcases of books to be signed. Loll. But again being a reader is not about the multitude of books you own or get signed it’s about the love for reading. I made sure to rid my jealous bibliophile heart of comparison!

Here are the events that I loved the most…

Tales of Transformation: Thrilling YA Fantasy

The authors for this book panel was Kiersten White, Danielle Clayton, Megan Shepherd, and Somalia Dad.

I have never read any of these ladies books but the authors that I loved listening to and I am intrigued by are Kiersten White, Daniella Clayton, and Megan Shepherd!

I have never been interested in reading The Belle’s until I heard Danielle Clayton speak and I found her discussions surrounding her book to be thought-provoking and relatable.

She spoke about her background of growing up in a very privileged existence and not seeing the reality about women of color and the role of women in society until later on in her life. The book The Belle’s was inspired by this woke experience that she had in her life. The fact that the book is dealing with current issues that women face wrapped up in a fantasy sounds like a very intriguing book!

Grim Lovelies sounds like the perfect fantasy novel for me because it is set in Paris (my dream place), the heroine is a quiet heroine and not your typical badass tell it like it is character!

Last year, I attended a book panel with Kiersten White and I promised myself that I would read her books and it is yet to be seen! #guilty

Her book The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein sounds like a delightfully creepy novel. Kiersten White stated that she was always fascinated by the life of Elizabeth Frankenstein and she told us a story that when the husband of Elizabeth Frankenstein died she actually stole his heart! Just hearing this cringy fact makes me want to pick up the book even more!

I have to say that this was my favorite group author panel of the whole weekend! You can see that the authors had incredible chemistry and I loved watching them joke with one another! There was a hilarious discussion about Hogwarts houses and Danielle Clayton admitted that she cheated her way to be a Hufflepuff but she is actually a Slytherin. Kiersten White jokingly said, “You know that is a Slytherin trait right?” They loved and respected one another’s work and that was refreshing to see!

Madeline Miller’s Circe

I am not a huge fantasy reader and I can count the number of fantasy books I have read this year with one hand but Circe has to be the best fantasy book I have read so far! Now I haven’t finished reading the book but so far I am in love with the exquisite and lush atmosphere that Madeline Miller has created. She mentioned that she has a background in theater and I can tell she has a gift of theater because she really captures the voice of Circe. When you read Miller’s writing you’re aware that she has definitely done her research on Greek mythology because it has the exact feel of Greek mythology only this time with a feminist perspective.

During the book panel, there was a podcast that was actually interviewing her and the interview was extremely thought-provoking. They covered the feminist perspective in her book and revealed the distinctions between the original story of Circe and her version of Circe. Miller discussed that she wanted to change the story and not have Circe be defined by the man she will marry unlike the original. I loved the discussions between them so much that I made sure to check out their future podcasts episodes and if anyone wants to check them out their podcast is fiction/non/fiction podcast.

Here are some quotes of Madeline Miller’s discussion that I absolutely loved…

“The more power and freedom that women have the more power and freedom men have.”

“Circe is mythological realism because it’s the kind of story where Circe is stuck in a horrible family and Odysseus is essential a war veteran that’s just trying to get home to his family.”

YA Authors on Love, Loneliness, and Everything in Between

The authors of this book panel were Janelle Milanes, David Levithan, and Ngozi Ukazu.

Unfortunately, David Levithan was completely blocked from this picture!

This book panel was my MOST ANTICIPATED BOOK PANEL ever! I was most excited to meet Janelle Milanes for this book panel because she wrote an own voices novel written by a Cuban American author with a Cuban American main character! As a Cuban American, it was a huge thrill for me to read this book and I was so excited to meet the author. I love how the writer writes about a character that can be relatable to anyone and she is not written as a caricature Cuban cha cha queen. The main character is a quiet and shy nerdy character just trying to get through high school and learning about romance for the first time. I love this novel because I grew up just like Analee in high school and being Cuban American I was stereotyped for most of my life to act a certain way and like certain things just because I am Cuban American.

I met David Levithan for the first time in this event and he seems to be a very sweet person. He spoke about his writing process and his experiences writing romance. In the panel, he mentioned that one of his favorite romance movies are Before Sunrise and he loved how they fell in love through just having one long deep conversation. I also believe that Before Sunrise is one of the most romantic movies on earth because what can be more romantic than having deep conversations walking around the streets of Vienna?!

The topic of the book panel was related around love and romance and it was a very entertaining discussion. They asked a good question to the authors about what draws them into a story and of course, my girl Janelle Milanes said that the romance is what draws her into a story first and I couldn’t agree more. There were hilarious discussions about their favorite ships such as wishing that Buffy and Spike ended up together. (I wholeheartedly disagree with this. Buffy and Angel forever.)

via GIPHY

David Levithan!
My last book signing was my most anticipated author! Janelle Milanes!

I told Janelle Milanes that I am so appreciative that this novel has Cuban American rep and she was so appreciative and humbled by my comments. We spoke about some tidbits about the book and she seems to be a super cool person to talk to!

This book panel was my last one of the weekend and I am so happy that it ended with getting to meet Janelle Milanes! I hope to meet her again and talk to her about the book Victoria in my Head which will be my next read!

Miami Book Fair was an insane weekend with back to back book panels but these book events always leave with the best book high! If you ever have the opportunity to go to these book events I highly recommend them because they are so inspiring and it’s a sure fire way to get rid of those book slumps!

Chat with me and let me know in the comments if there are any book events that you attended this year that you loved!

Evening with the Authors (Miami Book Fair)

November 14, 2018

Even though October is my favorite month of the year, I have to say that November is a close second because it’s the month of NaNoWriMo and the Miami Book Fair! The Miami Book Fair attracts all kinds of authors from the most publicized authors to independent authors that have a smaller community of readers. This event always fuels my love for reading and writing and I just love to hear authors talk about their books, their inspiration behind their books, and what their writing process is like.

Last Saturday I was able to meet Liane Moriarty and Laura Esquivel! To say I was excited to meet these two talented authors was a complete understatement!

The event began with the lovely and sweet-natured Laura Esquivel who is a legend in my eyes! She is a magical realism author from Mexico and her book “Like Water for Chocolate” completely affected me in ways that I can’t even explain to you. She opened up a world for me that I didn’t know existed and she is one of the authors that made me completely fall in love with magical realism and she is the reason why magical realism is still my favorite genre to read. Unfortunately, I only read “Like Water for Chocolate” and I haven’t read her other works but I highly recommend everyone read this book first before you delve into her other works. “Like Water for Chocolate” is the kind of book you want to read without knowing too much about the synopsis. Laura Esquivel is the kind of author that delves deep into her characters and eloquently writes the emotional journey that her characters go through. You can feel the gamut of emotions that the characters go through and her words are so magical and heart wrenching at the same time.

Now, unfortunately, I arrived late to the event and I forgot that the event was entirely in Spanish. My first language is Spanish but I have lost my Spanish along the way and I don’t know it perfectly. Either way being in the room in her presence and listening to her speak about her connection to the book was such a special and pivotal moment for me.

I tried to communicate with her my love for her book, for magical realism, and how I am writing a magical realism novel myself in my own mangled Spanish but she was extremely gracious and adorable about it. She is like a little sweet abuelita who you just want to hug and you can sense that she had such a warm energy about her.

Finally, I met Liane Moriarty and let me tell you that reading these women’s books have completely messed with my calorie counting. I went through so many bottles of wine reading Big Little Lies and don’t even get me started on My Husband’s Secret!

She spoke about her recently published book Nine Perfect Strangers which sounds like a very enticing read. The book is about nine people that check into a retreat of sorts where they expect hot stone massages and facials but end up getting something more than what they bargained for. I loved listening to Liane Moriarty speak and in celebration of her book, she framed her book talk on nine questions that strangers have asked her along the way. Through these questions, she spoke about herself, her writing process, the inspiration behind her books, and her author journey. I was surprised to find out that she started out in the corporate world and she was pushed to write when her sister published her own book. The stories of her journey as an author were humbling to hear and it really gave me perspective about success and the struggle to reach that success.

Attending these book events always leaves me with this bookish high where I am excited about adding all the books I saw in the fair to my endless TBR on Goodreads, excited to buy all the books and hide them from my husband, and just simply excited about continuing to be creative through my own writing!

Check out my next post about the Miami Book Fair next week! This coming weekend is the beginning of the actual street book fair and there will be book talks going on throughout the day that I will be attending as well. The fair continues until November 18th and words cannot express how excited I am to share with you more book event posts!

I Miss BookNet Fest

September 24, 2018

BookNet Fest is like the Disney World for book nerds like me! This is my second year attending BNF in Orlando, FL and I loved my experience so much that I am already highly anticipating for the next book event for next year! I loved my second year at BNF the most because I met so many amazing people the second time around. My first year at BNF I met a couple of people here and there but I was a bit socially awkward throughout the experience because I didn’t really know many people there.

The year of BNF 2018 was a complete game changer when it came to meeting people because of the creators of BookNet Fest created an actual discord app for BookNet Fest attendees to connect with one another! This was a perfect way to connect because I was able to get to know people, know their blogs/channels, and make lunch/dinner plans with them! It was awesomeness! Most of us bookish people may be introverted but we definitely need to connect to share our book nerd love with one another!

Day One

Unfortunately, I didn’t get to take many pictures the first day due to the fact that my phone was less than 20% that day! #Tragedy

Due to the amazing Discord app, I was able to share a room with blogger Sarah Viehmann,  Jocelyn @ Yogi with a Book, and Tea Hags! They were very accommodating and I am very grateful that they introduced me to one of the best things I have ever seen in my life!!! Three words!!! Potter Puppet Pals!!! There are no words to describe it just please watch it if you’re a fan of Harry Potter!

The Tea Hags did an awesome panel about Small Communities! I loved this panel because I am part of the small community when it comes to my blog and it is always nice to be able to connect with a panel that has to do with your own situation. They gave out some great advice about starting out in the book community and how it’s important to start and not to worry about having a perfect book channel/blog. One of the things, I learned about this panel is that it’s not about having 1,000 followers or even 10,000 followers, it’s really about the connection we make with other people through what we love which is simply books!

One of my favorite panels was the Outside of Romance panel because of course readbyzoe was part of the panel! I loved the panel because it discussed books, where the romance wasn’t the main focus and these kinds of books, are always my favorite books! Not to trash on romance because I am one that loves a good romance but I used to be a part of a romance book club and let me tell you, those romance books get old real fast! They discussed books that focused more on the family and friend dynamics such as To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and The Hate You Give. I asked a question about books about friendship and of course, I had to mention the book Since You’ve Been Gone because this book has my fave friendship in the world of YA! Friendship and family in books are lacking and we definitely need more books with these themes! Also, I would love a book that focuses on the three is a crowd dynamic! If any of you have any book recs about this topic I would appreciate it! Let me know in the comments below!

Not only were there well-known YouTubers and bloggers in the event but there were authors too like Alexa Donne! She hosted a mini writer’s meetup and this was the meetup where I met a lot of the people from BookNet Fest that I could now call friends! This writer’s meetup was a fun casual meetup where we just talked about how we are involved in the book community and what we are writing/working on. She started the meetup by asking us if we are plotters or pantsers! For those of you that don’t know what plotters/pantsers are basically plotters are people that plan out their writing through outlines etc. and pantsers are people that just write without much of a plan. I am someone that is mostly a plotter but during certain times of my writing, I am a pantser. After the meetup was over, I met a really funny blogger/writer local from Miami named Zina Hutton and we had wine and cheese and had an overall awesome time! Also, we met up with Madalyn from Novel Ink, Joce from Squibbles Reads, and Emily from Possibly Literate.

Zina Hutton wrote a short story for a book called Undercities that is made up of queer narratives set in an urban fantasy setting. I haven’t read her short story yet but I am really looking forward to delving into it since there aren’t enough queer narratives out there! If you would like to purchase the book you can contact Zina here.

Day Two

The day started with the keynote speech by Marines and Sam and they were lovely and cute as per usual! Then I attended the panel Finding Your Community which brought out many good points. Alexa Donne was amazing on the panel! She stated never to be friends with anyone to increase your own status and jokingly said that anyone that isn’t very approachable more than likely has social anxiety. Actually, I find this to be a fact because many booktubers that seem extremely approachable on camera are completely not!

Also, I attended the Sex in Romance panel which was entertaining as usual!

Sarah Viehmann @ Sarah Viehmann is in the query trenches Jess bookcrack @ jesswithanS

Then I had lunch with some lovely ladies such as Kelsey @ KelseyReads and Alexandra @ A Lovely Jaunt! They were such genuinely nice girls and I can’t wait to also meet up with them next year! Until then I can catch up with them through their bookish platforms!

My phone was dying at the end of the day and I was able to retreat to their quiet room where there were a charging station and coloring books based on amazing YA books! I am about to color the Lunar Chronicles here while charging my phone!

The last two panels that I attended was the book blogger workshop that always gives me some great advice that I was able to carry over to my blog just recently! Thank you Madalyn!

At the end, the last panel was Women of Color in Books and this was amazing, to say the least! The ladies were articulate, honest, and just overall beautiful people. It’s so important to continue to have women of color in our fictional stories so we can continue to represent all kinds of people. Growing up Latinx, I never had a Latinx actor or fictional character that I looked up to and I remember feeling out of place and having an identity crisis many times in my life. If I had that growing up through my books and the media I consume, my adolescent years would have been a bit more bearable!

At the end of the event, we all took pictures, said our goodbyes, got our books signed and headed over to the bar to enjoy our last few hours of BookNet Fest!

Last Day…#sob

My last day I spent it packing up and getting ready to have some me relaxing time before I headed out to drive the four hours back to Miami. I had an amazing breakfast where I indulged in way tooo much bacon.

I never got to experience the amazing pool at BookNet Fest last year so I decided it was time for a me day to relax by the pool, go to the jacuzzi, and read some Fangirl! Also, you can’t forget the pina colada. It was an amazing spa book day for me to say the least!

My BookNet Fest weekend was incredible! Last year, I was really excited about the huge BookTubers I was going to meet and the panelists but this year was my favorite of them all because it was the year I really connected with the book community! After all, it’s not as fun to meet famous creative book people if you’re not sharing the fangirl glee with others!

It was amazing to meet so many people that shared the same interests with me when it came to books and it was so awesome to share our book platforms with one another! My bookish heart is full and I am so ready to fill it up more for next year’s BookNet Fest 2019!!!!

Meeting Morgan Matson (#squeal)

June 20, 2018

Finally…

I am so happy to finally state that I have met Morgan Matson!

via GIPHY

Morgan Matson is one of my favorite YA contemporary authors and I have been wanting to meet her ever since I first read her books SYBG and Unexpected Everything which are one of my top reads!

I love Morgan Matson because her books make me go through the gamut of emotions from happiness, giddiness, nostalgia, and absolute sadness! When I read her books it’s like transporting myself back to high school. Her gift is her character development and she is so amazing at showing the growth the MC goes through! There are times that an author shows the character arc too quickly but Morgan Matson takes her time to develop her characters. She is the kind of author that writes the pivotal romantic scene until almost the end of the book but somehow it works into the story and it doesn’t feel like the story is dragging at all!

Save the Date

Now Morgan Matson just published her most recent book Save the Date and the story is set over a 3 day period! Morgan Matson describes it as a Father of the Bride meets Sixteen Candles which is pretty accurate! The real plus factor for me was Father of the Bride because that is my favorite wedding movie of all time!

I am currently reading Save the Date and I am amazed at how the MC Charlie Grant is slowly developing and I am very impressed that she develops this character over a 3 day period!

Miami to Decatur

So my husband, mother-in-law, and I basically drove nine hours from Miami to Decatur, GA to meet Morgan Matson! Actually correct that…they didn’t give two hoots about meeting her…my hubby was a trooper and he did this for me knowing my absolute adoration for this author!

Airbnb in Decatur

At around 7 at night, we arrived in Decatur and we settled in our lovely Airbnb! The deck was what won me over and made for some great Instagram inspired Morgan Matson pictures!

Case in point!

My hubby and I took a walk around the charming town of Decatur and we stopped at the lovely Children’s Bookstore Little Shop of Stories!

Not to brag, but Morgan Matson actually used this picture for her Instagram! Eeeek!

I bought my copy of Save the Date even though I already bought the Target version, Barnes and Noble version, and pre-ordered the Amazon version 6 months ago! The signing required you to purchase a copy of Save the Date at the Little Shop of Stories bookstore! But it works out because I will be doing an upcoming giveaway for a signed Save the Date!

Morgan Matson Signing is heeeerrre!

So the signing started at around 7 pm in the Decatur Library…

I met up with my friend Madalyn who I met from BookNet Fest who writes for Novel Ink! Check out her book blog it’s awesome! We had some lunch beforehand at a cute place in Decatur called Brick Store Pub and munched on some yummy pretzels and had some refreshing beer!

Everything in Decatur is walking distance so we walked over to the Decatur library and walked into a very official looking conference room in the library.

Right outside the conference room, Morgan provided us with yummy donuts from Revolution Doughnuts that unfortunately, I could barely finish due to the fact that I already stuffed myself with pretzels and beer with Madalyn!

Once we got ourselves settled in the front row, of course, my beloved Morgan Matson came in a few minutes later!

Yay!

She pitched the book and read a piece of her book at one of the many climatic parts of the book that sets off the whole story! Finally, she answered a few questions from other people and talked about the many challenges she had with writing a book over a 3 day period! Normally she is used to writing books that are set in the summer and it was a particular challenge for her to write over such a short period! But I must say that I am extremely amazed by the story development and I am almost more than halfway through the story.

After the book discussion, she immediately began to talk to us and loved my SYBG tote and even took a picture and used it in her Instagram story! (#squeal)

We stood in line for the actual signing and took a selfie in the process!

Finally when it was my turn to get my books signed! Luckily I won a notebook for traveling the farthest!

Isn’t it the cutest?! I am currently using this notebook for my book notes while I am reading Save the Date!

I don’t know what happened but as soon as I started to get my book signed by Morgan Matson it was like I turned into a mute! EEEK! The only thing I attempted to say to her is to please come to Miami to do a book signing! I wish that I told her what I loved about each book as she was signing it but oh well next time she comes to Miami (hopefully) I can tell her all these things!

Even though I was a bit quiet during the book signing she was so engaging and was so grateful that I came such a long way to meet her.

Meeting Morgan Matson was like meeting up with your old best friend from high school! She was so lovely, sweet, and can I just mention that I love her fashion sense! The jean jacket and dress combo were so on point! My friend Madalyn described her too perfectly by saying that Morgan Matson is the epitome of “summer!” Summer is just the perfect way to describe Morgan Matson when you meet her! She has no pretentious airs about being one of the most famous contemporary YA authors and is so freaking down to earth! I can’t say enough good things about her and I only wish she was my BFF!

Visiting Decatur, GA was a perfect getaway and I want to definitely come back for the Decatur Book Festival! I heard it’s one of the biggest book festivals in the country! At the end of my Decatur trip, I spent a few minutes alone reading Save the Date by the adorable deck and that was the perfect end to my trip to Decatur!
