Now if you have been reading my blog you know that I am always going to book events in Books and Books in Coral Gables! I have to say that this book event was one of my favorites of the year so far!
Loved seeing my book club friend introduce the authors @mynameismarines!
Sitting with my book club friend Aurora!
On March 14th at 7 pm, Tomi Adeyemi from Children of Blood and Bone and Elizabeth Acevedo from Poet X did a book talk and book signing! At the time, I was 70 pages away (I am dying now and waiting desperately for the second book!) from finishing Children of Blood and Bone and to say that I was excited to meet Tomi Adeyemi was an understatement! The world building in this book is incredible, the character development is on point, and the plot is riveting from beginning to end! One of the things that I loved about this book is that it has themes that are socially relevant to our society today such as how divided our society is because of hate. If you want to know more about this African fantasy and get hooked into the land of Orisha please click here!

Meeting these women was such an honor because they are such articulate and beautiful women inside and out. From the moment these women opened their mouths they spoke the truth of how their books represent our reality when it comes to religion, discrimination, family dynamics, and how hate is infiltrating our society. They even spoke about the Parkland shooting and how these kids should be running our country and they were making me laugh the whole time with all the jokes they cracked!
I fell in love with these eloquent women after meeting them especially Elizabeth Acevedo! This woman was a powerhouse! She writes slam poetry and her book Poet X consist of slam poetry and it’s a coming of age novel about a girl growing up in a Dominican family named Xiomara who discovers her own love of slam poetry! Since I was mainly there for Tomi Adeyemi I didn’t know about the brilliance of Ms. Acevedo! When I heard Elizabeth Acevedo speak about Poet X I immediately ran out to buy a copy of Poet X before the book signing! The writing is so brutally honest and her words exemplify the beauty and pain of growing up. I am not someone that usually reads poetry but the raw and soulful honesty of her words captured me and I hope to read more from her in the future! Do yourself a favor and read this book now!
